CHRISTMAS WALK - video clip

Believe it or not, I composed the core of this song in 15 min on Christmas night in 2011.
That night I had a long and pleasant walk in Paris to clear my head and enjoy the lovely parisian Christmas atmosphere.

I went out for just a couple of hours, ...this turned out to be a 5-hour walk. The lights, the smooth and dry air, everything was just perfect.

Once in my home studio I came up with a simple and swaying groove that would express the meditative state I experimented in that walk. The keyboards melody just adds a little touch of melancholy.

The guitar solo is the longest I've ever recorded (so far...). I deliberately chose a Fender Telecaser on that tune for the rawness of its woods. When overdriven, its single coils deliver a screaming bitterness that is nicely balanced by the obsessive, low-end background rythms.

This composition is also the first time I've ever considered music and video so closely intertwined. Before I recorded the first note of the guitar solo I had in mind exactly how the video would look like in the end.

Hope you'll enjoy.

Peace and quiet - Improvisation with tc electronic Flashback Delay

Hi there,

Here's an informal tune I wrote on the fly with the tc electronic Flashback Delay.

This is the TAPE mode, an emulation of the old-style tape delays. Combined with the Lovepedal Babyface Tremolo, it creates a vintage atmosphere where the sounds swells nicely back and forth like waves or unpredictable patterns.

Enjoy it

Blues - Improvisation with tc electronic Flashback Delay

Aupa!

Here's an informal improvisation with the tc electronic Flashback Delay, in the (just cooooool, baby) DYN mode of the pedal.

While playing, the dynamic delay allows you to play without being overwhelmed by the effect as the level is attenuated.
Moreover the effect's output is directly triggered by the attack of the input signal, which enables limitless damn crazy ideas between phrases!

The rawness of the sound is what I dig the most in the Telecaster. The nervousness of the ash body and the brightness of the maple neck are the perfect match to an overdriven Marshall amp. The RC Booster just ads more low-end balls to the sound.

Enjoy it
Jean-François

In the Temple - Improvisation with tc electronic Flashback Delay

Hi folks,

I've just purchased the tc electronic Flashback delay pedal. This new gear is simply amazing to play, its versatility led me to improvise for hours this morning.

This video is an informal improvisation in the "2290 mode" of the pedal, the digital delay section.

Enjoy it!

Interview "Le Son du Bout des Pieds" (08/2011)

Hi folks,

French guitar-gear website LeSonDuBoutDesPieds.fr contacted me lately to make an interview about effects.

Sirka asked me to describe my rigs, to share a few experiences and to explain my connection to guitar-effects through the years.

I hope my answers are as interesting as the questions.

On a desert island

Every 2 weeks I update my iPod library. Picking 30 or 40 albums out of 400 is always a wrenching experience since I don't really know how my musical needs will be several days later. Not to mention I'm very good at wanting to listen to THAT specific song which happens to be out of the iPod, argghh...
This moment of selection is a frequent opportunity to look at my tastes and how they evolve as months pass by.

I always noticed that whatever the trends, I always come back to the music I loved when I was a teenager. Actually this is true for all people who really care for music. No wonder Jeff Beck is a huge rockabilly fan, Lemmy Kilmister and Ozzy Osbourne have always looked up to the Beatles.

Have you ever felt tattooed by some songs or albums? I'm quite sure you dug these songs when you were twenty-something or before.

To be honest, if I were to stay for a looooong, long time on a desert island I'd rather stay in touch with myself with a bunch of CDs instead of a TV set.

My sanity kit would be made of 10 albums :

Ozzy Osbourne "Just say Ozzy"
Ennio Morricone "Once upon a time in America/the West"
Jeff Beck "Guitar Shop"
Kanye West "Late Registration"
Paco de Lucia "Sirocco"
Van Halen "1984"
Kenny Garrett "Pursuance"
Aerosmith "Pump"
Michael Jackson "Dangerous"
Pablo Casals "JS Bach's cello Suites"

What about yours?  :)

Peace
JF
